The welcome of baptism is for all God’s children. This baptismal gift set us free from the power of sin and death. Christ promises that the disciple who gives a cup of cold water to the little ones serves Christ himself. From worship we are sent on our baptismal mission: to serve the little ones of this world and to be a sign of God’s merciful welcome. Sunday, July 6 – Eighth Sunday after the Pentecost – 10:15AM
Pastor Elizabeth Beissel
and Friends
Worship with Holy Communion. Like the Apostle Paul, we struggle with our own selfish desires and seek God’s mercy and forgiveness. Especially during times of war and conflict over economic woes and political uncertainty, we gather to be refreshed by Christ’s invitation: “Come to me, all you that are weary and carrying heavy burdens.” We gather this day to remember those who have given much for this country’s freedoms and those who now are struggling to maintain such blessings.

God’s Word is like the rain that waters the earth and brings forth vegetation. It is also like the sower who scatters seed indiscriminately. Our lives are like seeds sown in the earth. Even from what appears to be little, dormant or dead, God promises a harvest.
Sunday, July 20 –Tenth Sunday after the Pentecost – 10:15 AM
Jon Ellefson
Worship with Holy Communion
It is an age-old question: “Why is there evil in the world?” In the parable of the wheat and the weeds Jesus suggests that both grow together until the harvest. With Paul, we long for the day that all creation will be set free from bondage and suffering. Having both weeds and wheat within us, we humbly place our hope in the promises of God and from the Lord’s Table we go forth to bear the fruit of justice and mercy.
Sunday, July 27 – Eleventh Sunday after the Pentecost – 10:15 AM
Pastor Elizabeth Beissel
In baptism God promises that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. As Solomon prays for wisdom, we seek to more deeply know the treasures of faith, ancient yet ever new. In today’s Gospel Jesus offers images from everyday life that reveal to us the reign of God: a tree that becomes safe and sheltering home; yeast that penetrates and expands; a treasured pear; a net that gains a great catch. Even as we seek the riches of God’s reign, the great surprise is that God’s grace finds us first.

THE WELL
The Well is a time for digging deeper into our faith, a time to address our fears, confront our foes, and rejoice in our blessings! This year we are beginning something new, a summer program of intergenerational Sunday school, which will begin on June 15th, is a time for us to gather as a body, young and old, where we study together the great themes of the Bible. During this summer’s WELL we will lay the story of Joseph in the Bible next to the modern day movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, a superb movie. Both of these, Joseph’s story and the movie allow us to address the many times we feel we are wrongfully victimized by life's events and then to ask, “How do I handle events and times in my life?”
June 1, an opportunity for us to share with our youth the stories of our confirmations and encouraging them with stories of our life's journey since confirmation.
June 8, Consolation of the Soul when we spend time sharing our lives with one another.
June 15 begins Augustana’s Intergenerational Sunday School with a two Trigger Event: A brother is sold into slavery by his beloved brothers and a young woman is thrown out of her home by a husband who cheated and now wants to bring in the mistress and his two children … it's just not fair!
June 22, Victim Mentality: The brother sold into slavery is wronged again by Potipher's wife so slavery becomes jail and I'm not another bitter black woman, I'm MAD!
June 29, Let's gather to honor Diane Johnson. The VOAUG (voice of Augustana) will broadcast live from Fellowship Hall with an interview. Bring a memory or a question.
During July we continue with the story of justice as seen through the eyes of two movies – The Diary of a Mad Black Woman and Joseph and the Technicolor Coat. There will be two exceptions to this: On July 13 Dr. Steve and Bethany Friberg will share with us their ministry and life in Tanzania and on August 10 we will share our love and care with one another over coffee, goodies, and much laughter.
- July 6: How sweet revenge feels: Jail House Rock
- July 13: Dr. Steve and Bethany Friberg.
- July 20: New Friendship: From jail to #2
- July 27: Shadows of the past: enter the bros
- August 3: Must I forgive: Benjamin goes to jail
- August 10: Consolation of the Soul over coffee and conversation
- August 17: Resolution and Restoration
